Pellet Stoves

A pellet stove burns compressed sawdust pellets in a precisely metered auger fed combustion chamber, delivering thermostatic heat with the convenience of a furnace and the cost per BTU of cordwood.

Pellet stoves operate at 75 to 85 percent efficiency with EPA emissions under 2.0 grams per hour, the cleanest burn in the solid fuel category. Outputs range from 25,000 to 70,000 BTUs, heating 800 to 2,500 square feet on a single hopper load that lasts 12 to 48 hours. Every stove Fireplace Insider sells ships free nationwide with white glove delivery, and is backed by our 20 plus years of hearth industry experience and price match guarantee.

We carry pellet stoves from Quadra-Fire, Napoleon, Osburn, Regency, and Majestic, in freestanding, insert, and bay window configurations. For traditional cordwood heat without pellets and electricity, see our Wood Stoves collection or use our BTU Calculator to size the right output.

How to Choose the Right Pellet Stove

Six factors that determine whether a pellet stove will heat reliably and earn its place in the room.

Size BTU output to your square footage

Pellet stoves are rated in BTUs per hour at maximum burn rate. Plan on 20 to 30 BTUs per square foot in a well insulated space. A 40,000 BTU stove heats 1,200 to 1,800 square feet. Oversized pellet stoves cycle on and off frequently, reducing efficiency and wearing components faster. Our BTU Calculator handles climate and insulation adjustments.

Match hopper size to your fill frequency

Hopper capacity ranges from 40 to 130 pounds. A 60 pound hopper at medium burn lasts about 24 hours. A 120 pound hopper at low burn can run 48 to 72 hours. Larger hoppers cost more and add bulk to the stove, but they make a real difference if you travel or want to load only once per day.

Choose freestanding, insert, or bay window

Freestanding pellet stoves vent through a rear or side wall and stand on a hearth pad in the room. Pellet inserts drop into an existing masonry fireplace and use the chimney for venting. Bay window models have a wide curved glass front for a panoramic flame view. The choice depends on whether you have an existing fireplace and the look you want.

Plan for the electrical requirement

Pellet stoves need a standard 120 volt outlet to power the auger, combustion fan, and convection blower. Total draw is roughly 100 to 400 watts depending on burn rate. A battery backup or small generator is recommended in regions with frequent outages. Without electricity, a pellet stove will not run, unlike a traditional wood stove.

Verify your venting route

Pellet vent pipe is a sealed double wall 3 or 4 inch system rated for the lower flue temperatures of pellet appliances. It can vent horizontally through an exterior wall or vertically through the roof. Total run length and elbow count are limited per the install manual. Outside air intake is required in tightly insulated homes.

Budget for pellets and annual maintenance

Premium hardwood pellets run 6 to 10 dollars per 40 pound bag, with three tons typical for a winter of primary heat (90 to 150 bags). Annual maintenance includes vacuuming the combustion chamber every 30 to 60 bags, cleaning the heat exchanger, and a professional service every season at 150 to 300 dollars. Plan the ongoing cost into the decision.

Pellet Stove Questions

The questions our hearth specialists answer most often before a customer places an order.

How much do pellets cost compared to oil or gas?

A ton of premium pellets at 300 to 400 dollars produces roughly the heat equivalent of 120 gallons of fuel oil or 130 therms of natural gas. In most of the Northeast and upper Midwest, pellet heat costs 30 to 50 percent less than fuel oil. Pricing depends on regional supply and seasonal demand.

Can a pellet stove run during a power outage?

Not without backup power. The auger and combustion fan require 120 volt electricity. A small inverter generator or a battery backup with at least 1,000 watt hours of capacity will run most pellet stoves through an outage. If power reliability is a concern, a wood stove may be the better choice.

How often do I need to clean a pellet stove?

Daily ash inspection during heating season, a thorough vacuum every 30 to 60 bags of pellets burned, and a full professional cleaning once a year. The frequency varies with pellet quality. Premium hardwood pellets produce less ash than economy softwood blends. A clean stove burns hotter, cleaner, and more efficiently.

Are pellet stoves quiet?

They are not silent. The auger clicks softly as it feeds pellets, and the combustion and convection fans run continuously while the stove is on. Most modern stoves are about as loud as a refrigerator at low burn. Quality bearings and proper installation keep noise to a minimum. A wood stove is quieter overall.

How long do pellet stoves last?

A quality pellet stove lasts 15 to 20 years with annual maintenance. The combustion fan, convection blower, and auger motor are the most common replacement parts and typically last 8 to 12 years. The firebox, hopper, and electronic controls usually outlast the moving components. Premium brands carry the longest warranties.
