Post-Mount Gas Grills

A post-mount gas grill anchors to a permanent in ground post or patio mounted base, delivering a stationary cooking station without the cost or footprint of a full outdoor kitchen island.

Post-mount gas grills are sized in widths from 24 to 36 inches with cooking surfaces of 432 to 660 square inches and BTU output of 60,000 to 105,000. The hooded grill head is identical to a built-in unit but mounts on a stainless or powder coated steel post with no surrounding cabinetry. Every grill Fireplace Insider sells ships free nationwide with white glove delivery, and is backed by our 20 plus years of hearth industry experience.

How to Choose the Right Post-Mount Gas Grill

Six factors that determine whether a post mount is the right path between portable and fully built-in.

Understand the post-mount value proposition

A post-mount grill delivers the same premium grill head as a built-in installation at roughly half the total project cost, since there is no island, countertop, or cabinetry. It is also relocatable if you move. The trade off is no integrated counter space and a less finished aesthetic. For permanent grilling stations without full kitchen build out, it is the best value.

Choose the mount style for your patio

In ground post mounts dig 18 to 24 inches into a concrete footing, ideal for new patio installations and permanent placement. Patio post mounts bolt to an existing concrete pad or paver patio with anchor bolts, allowing relocation later. Some models include a cart base option that adds wheels and storage. Match the mount style to the install surface.

Plan gas supply routing

Natural gas post mount installations route a 1/2 inch black iron or CSST flex line through the post to the grill head with a shutoff valve at the base. Propane installations use a hidden tank compartment in the post or an external tank with a flexible line. The post must accommodate the gas line internally for a clean installation.

Size cooking area for outdoor use

Post-mount grills come in three primary sizes: 24 inch (432 square inches) for couples and small families, 30 inch (540 square inches) for families of four to six, and 36 inch (660 square inches) for regular entertaining. Because there is no surrounding counter, plan for a separate prep table or cart nearby.

Confirm 304 stainless steel construction

Post-mount grills are fully exposed to weather on all sides, including the underside of the grill head and the support post. 304 grade stainless steel is essential for both the grill body and the mounting post. Lower grade stainless or powder coated steel posts will rust at the patio mount base within 3 to 5 years, especially in coastal or salted patio environments.

Plan for clearance and shielding

Post-mount grills require minimum clearances published in the install manual, typically 18 to 24 inches from combustible walls, railings, or fences. The grill swings open to access burners and parts on most models, so plan clearance behind and around the post. Position the grill so prevailing wind carries smoke away from doors and windows.

Post-Mount Gas Grill Questions

The questions our hearth specialists answer most often before a customer places an order.

What is the difference between a post-mount grill and a built-in grill?

The grill head itself is identical on premium brands. The difference is mounting: built-in grills install into an island with surrounding cabinetry and counter, while post-mount grills attach to a stainless steel support post. Total project cost for a post mount is typically half that of a comparable built-in island installation.

Can I install a post-mount grill myself?

Patio mount installation on existing concrete is straightforward DIY work, typically 2 to 4 hours with basic tools. In ground installation requires digging an 18 to 24 inch footing hole and pouring concrete, plus 24 to 48 hours of cure time before final mounting. Gas line connection should always be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.

Are post-mount grills less expensive than built-in installations?

Significantly. A 30 inch premium post-mount grill totals 3,000 to 5,500 dollars installed. The same grill head in a built-in island with counter and cabinetry runs 8,000 to 18,000 dollars total project cost. Post mount delivers the same cooking experience for less than half the total investment.

Can I convert a post-mount grill to a built-in later?

Yes. Most premium post-mount grill heads can be removed from the post and installed into a built-in island cutout. Verify with the manufacturer that the grill model is also approved for built-in use. This gives flexibility to start with a post mount and upgrade to a full outdoor kitchen in a later phase.

How long do post-mount grills last?

A premium 304 stainless post-mount grill from Fire Magic lasts 15 to 20 years with regular cleaning and a fitted cover. The grill head matches built-in service life. The mounting post typically outlasts the grill itself. Burners are the first wear part at 8 to 12 years. Igniters last 3 to 7 years.
