Vent Free Gas Log Sets

A vent free gas log set converts an existing masonry or factory built firebox into an instant high efficiency heater, with no chimney draft, no heat loss up the flue, and the dry damper clamped shut.

Vent free log sets burn at near complete combustion and deliver up to 99.9 percent of their fuel input as heat to the room. Outputs typically range from 10,000 to 40,000 BTUs, enough to heat 250 to 1,000 square feet depending on insulation. Every set Fireplace Insider sells includes an Oxygen Depletion Sensor, ships free nationwide with white glove delivery, and is backed by our 20 plus years of hearth industry expertise.

We carry vent free log sets from Real Fyre, Grand Canyon Gas Logs, White Mountain Hearth, Empire, and Majestic, in oak, hickory, birch, and split log styles. For sets that require an open damper and a working flue, see our Vented Gas Log Sets collection.

How to Choose the Right Vent Free Gas Log Set

Six factors that determine whether a vent free log set will fit, heat correctly, and meet code in your home.

Measure the firebox before you size the log

Vent free log sets are sized in nominal inches (18, 24, 30, 36) but each manufacturer has a minimum firebox width, depth, and height. Measure the front opening width, the back wall width, and depth from the front edge to the back wall. A 24 inch set typically needs a firebox at least 30 inches wide at the front and 16 inches deep.

Confirm vent free is legal in your state

California prohibits vent free appliances, and parts of New York City, Massachusetts, and other jurisdictions restrict them. Check your local building department before purchase. Where vent free is permitted, the damper must be clamped permanently open at least 6 square inches to vent any incidental combustion byproducts, per most install manuals.

Match BTU output to the room, not the firebox

Vent free log sets range from 10,000 to 40,000 BTUs. Sizing is conservative because all combustion byproducts release into the room. Plan on 20 BTUs per square foot in a well insulated space, and never exceed the room volume rating in the manual. Our BTU Calculator includes vent free sizing.

Choose between manual valve and remote control

Match light sets are the lowest cost option, lit with a long match at the burner. Manual safety pilot valves add a thermocouple and on/off knob. Variable flame remote ready sets accept a wireless thermostat, timer, or smartphone remote. The remote ready option costs more but adds significant convenience for daily use.

Pick the log style that suits your interior

Refractory ceramic logs are hand painted to mimic oak, birch, hickory, or split wood and are the most realistic in the off position. Higher tier sets from Real Fyre and Grand Canyon use hand cast molds taken from real wood and include glowing embers, lava rock, or wood chip media. Match the species and color tone to your room.

Verify gas type and BTU draw

Vent free log sets run on natural gas or propane and are configured at the factory. Conversion kits exist but must be installed by a qualified technician with new orifices. At higher BTU levels the gas supply line must be sized correctly. A 30,000 BTU set typically requires a half inch supply line for proper pressure at the appliance.

Vent Free Gas Log Questions

The questions our hearth specialists answer most often before a customer places an order.

What is the difference between vent free and vented gas logs?

Vent free logs burn cleanly and release nearly all heat into the room with the damper closed, delivering up to 99.9 percent efficiency. Vented logs require the damper open and produce a tall realistic yellow flame but lose most of their heat up the chimney. Vent free is for heat, vented is for appearance.

Can vent free logs go in any fireplace?

They require a sound masonry firebox or a factory built fireplace specifically listed for vent free log sets. The chimney must remain in place and the damper clamped permanently open by a small amount. Vent free logs cannot be installed in a sealed direct vent fireplace or a fireplace without a chimney.

Why does my vent free log set produce soot?

Soot indicates incomplete combustion, almost always caused by logs that are out of position. The logs must be placed exactly as shown in the manual. Even a quarter inch shift can disrupt the flame pattern. Lint, dust, and pet hair in the burner ports also cause sooting. An annual cleaning resolves both issues.

Can I install a vent free log set in a bedroom?

Most codes limit vent free appliances in bedrooms to 6,000 BTU input and prohibit them entirely in bathrooms under 90 square feet. Some jurisdictions ban them in bedrooms outright. Check your local code and the install manual. A small 6,000 BTU log set is the typical compliant choice when allowed.

How long do vent free gas logs last?

The refractory ceramic logs themselves typically last 10 to 15 years before color fade and surface chipping become noticeable. The burner, valve, and ODS pilot assembly will outlast the logs and can be reused with a replacement log set. Annual cleaning of the burner ports extends service life significantly.
