Outdoor Gas Log Sets

An outdoor gas log set drops into an existing masonry outdoor fireplace or fire pit and converts cordwood operation into instant push button flame, eliminating ash cleanup, smoke management, and the chore of stacking and seasoning firewood.

Outdoor gas log sets are engineered for weather exposure with stainless steel burners, weather rated electronic igniters, and refractory ceramic logs designed to withstand freeze thaw cycles. BTU output ranges from 60,000 to 150,000 depending on burner size and natural gas or propane configuration. Every set Fireplace Insider sells ships free nationwide with white glove delivery, and is backed by our 20 plus years of hearth industry expertise.

We carry outdoor gas log sets from Grand Canyon Gas Logs, Real Fyre, and White Mountain Hearth in oak, hickory, juniper, and driftwood styles. For complete outdoor fireplaces, see our Outdoor Gas Fireplaces collection or browse Outdoor Wood Fireplaces for traditional cordwood units.

How to Choose the Right Outdoor Gas Log Set

Six factors that determine whether your outdoor log set will perform for a decade or fail in two seasons.

Buy outdoor rated, never indoor adapted

Outdoor gas log sets use stainless steel burner pans, weatherproof igniters, and refractory ceramic logs formulated for freeze thaw cycles. Indoor log sets installed outdoors fail within one to two seasons. Verify outdoor or all weather certification on the spec sheet. The price premium of 30 to 60 percent over indoor sets is essential for any outdoor application.

Measure your fire pit or firebox

Outdoor log sets are sized nominally in inches (18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48). Each set requires minimum firebox or pit dimensions for proper flame clearance and combustion. Measure inside dimensions of the existing pit or firebox at the widest, narrowest, and depth points. A 30 inch set typically needs 36 inches of width and 18 inches of depth.

Choose between match light and electronic ignition

Match light sets are the lowest cost option, lit with a long match at the burner. Manual safety pilot kits add a thermocouple and on off knob. Electronic ignition with a wall switch, remote control, or smartphone connectivity is the convenience standard for outdoor use. Premium outdoor sets include weather rated ignition modules with sealed electronics.

Match BTU output to your fire experience

Outdoor log sets run 60,000 to 150,000 BTU. Higher BTU produces taller, more dramatic flames suited to large outdoor entertaining areas. Lower BTU output is more efficient and provides a more intimate flame suitable for small patios. Outdoor heat output is largely lost to the surrounding air, so BTU is selected for flame appearance rather than warmth.

Plan gas supply and shutoff

Natural gas outdoor log sets require a buried gas line from the home with a shutoff valve at the fire feature. Propane installations use a hidden tank compartment or external tank. Gas line size depends on BTU rating, typically 1/2 inch for sets under 100,000 BTU and 3/4 inch above. All connections should be made by a licensed gas fitter.

Add lava rock or fire glass media

Outdoor log sets are typically enhanced with lava rock, fire glass, or river stone as a base media beneath and around the logs. The media hides the burner pan, diffuses heat, and adds visual interest. Choose colors that complement the surrounding hardscape. Most premium sets include media options or sell them as add ons.

Outdoor Gas Log Set Questions

The questions our hearth specialists answer most often before a customer places an order.

Can I use an indoor gas log set outdoors?

No. Indoor log sets use mild steel burners and electronics not rated for weather exposure. Within one to two seasons of outdoor use, the burner will rust through, the igniter will fail, and the logs will crack from freeze thaw cycles. Always specify an outdoor or all weather rated log set for any outdoor application.

Do outdoor gas logs need a chimney or vent?

Not in an open fire pit, since combustion byproducts dissipate into the open air. In a covered outdoor fireplace with a flue, the chimney must be present and functional. Some semi enclosed outdoor structures may require venting depending on local code. Check with your building department before installation.

How realistic are outdoor gas logs compared to wood?

Premium outdoor sets from Grand Canyon Gas Logs and Real Fyre use hand cast molds from real cordwood with applied bark, char, and split detail. From conversational distance the realism is convincing. The flame is taller and more uniform than a wood fire. The trade off is instant on, no smoke, no ash, and predictable behavior every time.

How long do outdoor gas log sets last?

Premium outdoor log sets with stainless burners and weather rated electronics last 10 to 15 years. Refractory logs typically need replacement at 8 to 12 years as color fades and small chips appear. The burner pan, valve, and ignition module often outlast the logs and can be reused with replacement logs.

Can outdoor gas log sets run year round?

Yes. Outdoor log sets are designed for all weather operation including freezing temperatures and snow. Propane regulators may require winterization in extreme cold (below minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit). Cover the burner area when not in use to prevent debris, ice, and animal nesting from interfering with ignition.
