About This Service

Transform Any Surface with Natural or Cultured Stone

Thin stone veneer is the fastest, most cost-effective way to dramatically transform a fireplace, accent wall, or exterior surface without the structural demands of full-bed stone. At roughly one inch thick, thin veneer adheres directly to existing brick, drywall, concrete, or wood-framed walls. No new footings, no major structural changes, no removal of the existing surface in most cases.

We work with both natural cut stone and high-quality cultured (manufactured) veneer. Natural stone offers genuine character, color variation, and exceptional durability, particularly suited to historic and premium projects. Cultured veneer offers wider color and shape options at a more accessible price point and adheres easily to a broader range of substrates.

Our scope covers indoor fireplace surrounds, outdoor fireplace and fire pit veneer, full-height accent walls, kitchen backsplashes, and exterior siding installations. Every project starts with an in-home consultation, stone selection guidance, and a written quote covering materials, labor, and finish work.

Common Questions

Thin Stone Veneer Installation FAQ

What's the difference between thin stone veneer and full-bed stone?
Full-bed stone is 3 to 5 inches thick and bears its own weight, requiring structural support and footings. Thin stone veneer is roughly 1 inch thick and adheres to the existing surface like a tile, no structural support needed. Visually, properly installed thin veneer is indistinguishable from full-bed stone, especially with proper corner pieces.
Natural stone or cultured stone, which should I choose?
Both look beautiful when installed well. Natural stone offers genuine character, unique color variation, and exceptional durability. Cultured stone offers more shape and color consistency, easier substrate adhesion, and lower material cost. We bring samples of both during consultation so you can see and feel the difference.
Can stone veneer go directly over my existing brick fireplace?
Yes, in most cases. Brick provides a solid substrate that holds the new mortar and stone well. We clean and prep the existing brick, apply a scratch coat, and install the new stone directly over it. This avoids the cost and mess of demolition.
How long does a fireplace surround project take?
Most fireplace surround projects run 2 to 4 days from start to finish, including prep, installation, and finish work. Larger projects, full-height accent walls, or exterior installations can run a week or more depending on scope.
Will thin stone veneer hold up outdoors in Connecticut winters?
Yes, when installed correctly. Outdoor installations require freeze-thaw rated mortar and proper joint sealing to prevent water intrusion that could pop stones off during winter cycles. We use the right materials and methods for each environment.
Do I need to remove my existing surround first?
Not always. Thin veneer can install directly over many existing surfaces including brick, drywall, and properly prepped tile. Removal is sometimes recommended if the existing surface is severely damaged or structurally unsound. We assess this during the consultation.
